I do not know anyone who has created his iPod in a more "customized to the owner" than me. I'm sure out there, but have not yet fulfilled. Here are some of the principles I have followed playlists you've created, and the forms it uses the iPod and iTunes to create my custom iPod experience.

1. Be a guardian critical: only include songs on your iPod that you do not want to ignore forever. In other words, do not let them get a song on your iPod if a song you do not like, or a song that would never know if they were going to play your iTunes library at random. When I put the 500-CD collection on my iBook G4 in November / December 2004, and then to my iPod, I do not download entire CD. Just download the songs that passed the previous test. Since then, I downloaded every song I do not I have that I like enough to not jump on it (about 400 songs purchased). As a result, my iPod is a collection of every song I like, that is available to me. My iPod yells to push "play" because there is never the possibility of a "blah" song will come on. (Yes, I do ignore song lyrics once in a while, but not because it is a song I do not like, simply because I want to hear at that moment.)

A key to create a fully customized music library is to forget what other people might think that by like a song or artist – If you like Barry Manilow or Cyndi Lauper, get your songs on your iPod! (My library includes 12 songs Manilow, and 6 subjects Lauper. To hell with the critics of the music of my taste!'s My iPod!)

2. Rate your songs, then create smart playlists that reference data in your file. All my songs are rated with 3, 4 or 5 stars. (If a 2-star song, it does not in my iPod.) The playlists that have established that the use of my scores are: a) 5-star song lyrics. b) 4-star songs. c) 5-star songs played 1 or 0. d) 5 and 4-star songs played 1 or 0. e) 5 and 4-country songs.

You might think I heard my 5-star list more often, but I find that I am more attracted to my playlist 4-star, and my 4 and 5-star playlist, since there is the promise of greater variety and therefore more surprises. (That I have over 350 songs, 5 stars, and 1,650 songs 4 stars.) 5-My songs are the star songs that will always be my favorites, but it also means that I've heard many times already. My 5-star list is the one I play when I am providing the music for a party or public meeting of some sort. Only the best for my guests, and if anyone will comment on the music (with praise or criticism), I want it to be only my favorite precious.

3. Create smart playlists that group songs by playcount. The most played song on my iPod is played 96 times. (Accidentally In Love, Counting Crows – my children # 1 most requested song.) My tenth most played song played 41 times (Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver – another popular request of my children). My 100th most played: 13 songs tied at 15 times played. My 500th most played: 115 songs tied at 4 times played. My 1,000 more played: 305 songs tied at 3 times played.

I found that sometimes I want to hear my group most played (top-100), sometimes I listen to the next level of most played (top-101-300), sometimes the next level (played 3-4 times) and sometimes I listen to songs rarely (if ever) played. The playlists that I created to do this work are: a) 1-100 songs played more. b) Top-600 songs that play more. c) 101-350 most played songs. d) 350-600 more songs played. 600-1000 words to songs and most played). f) Top-1, 000 songs that play more. g) the songs played 0-1 times.

4. Dig up buried treasure: iTunes search for alternative versions of the 5-star songs, and download that make you go "Wow!" I probably downloaded 60 songs that are alternate or live versions – or decks – of my favorite songs. And many of these cards have become carriers of the members club song from my 5-star! Think about it – if you like a song enough to give it 5 stars, there are probably many musicians out there who have loved enough to cover it. And often, there is a live version you never knew existed. Now, most of alternates / COVER / live versions that I have shows on iTunes are not good enough to download. But perhaps one in five is excellent – and then you have found a buried treasure for your iPod!
